Backstory
Say i won’t quit this bitch right now - the full album, is how we wanted to put the project out at first. The one that
Back when I had my manager Sedrique, somehow someway this man got us a month long mentorship from Philip Payne (Tory Lanez manager from before the scandal)!! An insane opportunity that we unfortunately couldn’t fully capitalize on due to work schedules. Funny how things work out like that…
The most valuable thing we got out of that experience was the thesis for our album:
“Fuck this job, and I will quit the very next time someone talks to me out of line”
From the time Philip pointed us in that direction, it took about a year to actually write, record, and get all the songs mixed. Then progress halted again as lives became busy and we became focused on other things. For me personally, it was getting my degree in Audio Engineering - the very degree that allowed me to finish the project!
The reason we dropped a shorter version of the album on streaming was simply due to life still being busy for Zateb and D Nel, and my impatience when I’ve decided to release something. So, I just released the songs that I felt were ready and moved on. But now… well nothing is stopping me now.
Tracklist
* = Brand new track
Track 1: Say I Won’t - Callmesolstice, Zateb, D Nel
The title track to set the vibe for the whole ride. We had to set it all off with this song, it just catches the vibe too well to ignore. Oh and to clear this up, I never worked for UPS - even though that is me flicking off their store. All I have to say about that is, Worker Solidarity ✊🏽😪.
*Track 2: Graveyard Shift - D Nel
This song is a mellow reflection on the life of an artist who knows they are talented, but still has to deal with the everyday annoyances of overbearing manager. Thematically it kinda shows the sadness that lies beneath the anger of the first track, kinda like the frustration one might feel closing up a shift followed by the quiet sadness of realizing you have to come back. Although I may be pulling more from my experiences than D Nels lol.
Track 3: Day Dreamin - Zateb, D Nel
Unironically my favorite song on the album in my opinion and that includes all of my own. This song is so good I put it on the original EP, even though I wasn’t on the song. It’s so good everyone simply had to hear it. The craziest part is, the reason they even made this song is because I pointed out they hadn’t made one together. I kid you not, within 2 hours of me sending that message, the whole song was done and sitting in our groupchat. Truly astonishing work from these gentlemen.
*Track 4: Clock out - Zateb
This was actually one of the first songs that was completed for the project, and boy did Teb set the bar high with this one. Similar to Graveyard Shift, this song is meant to juxtapose the hopefulness in Day Dreamin, this time by showing the struggle of maintaining that hopefulness once the daydreams are over. Another favorite of mine.
Track 5: 5 Callmesolstice, D Nel, Zateb
Now for most of these songs I’m talking about how jobs suck in general. But this one here, was inspired by a specific job. The place would be open until 4 on the weekends and where we were, the clubs had us packed and busy for most of the night. To make a long story short, this job started me smoking cigarettes. Something about cleaning a hot grill with a brick of carbon too many times changes people….
Track 6: Enuf - Callmesolstice, Zateb
Finally, a song for the servers amirite? If you’ve never worked in a busy full service restaurant, this is a little taste of how it feels. Thematically it’s signifying a bit of a breaking point. We’ve jumped from emotion to emotion too many times and now, we’re fed up. It’s no longer about being part of a team, it’s about making my money with the least effort possible. They’ve had enuf, and I’ve done enuf.
*Track 7: 9-5 - D Nel
Just in case you’re wondering why we hadn’t quit these jobs already, this song can serve as a bit of a reminder. D Nel talks about how the grind of work is what sustains his community, and even though he’s tired, the grind don’t stop.
*Track 8: Working out - Zateb
Listen, this song is so good, when Teb sent it to the group chat I immediately facetimed him to cuss him out. This song has no right being so damn good. It’s about that feeling of being worn down by constant work demands, when that energy could be better spent on your dreams. But honestly, just listen fam. This shit goes absolutely crazy.
*Track 9: Off Day - Zateb, Callmesolstice
A bit of a vibe cleanser, this song is about finding time to get freaky with ya lady. When Zateb first sent this to the group chat, it was just a little snippet of the hook. He wasn’t even gonna finish it but I wrote a whole verse for it in the same day, so I kinda made him do it (I may have had some control issues to work out lol)
Track 10: solstice almost live from NY - Callmesolstice
The second collaboration between me and fellow Pannetone.png member Loto, this song is lowkey just me venting. Inspired by a particularly rainy week of riding the bus to work, I was tired of not making enough to even start saving. And with no one around me in a much better position, this beat was the only place I had at the time to complain.
*Track 11: Cocky - D Nel
Cocky gives “I just got a check off this music” energy. Which is to say, hella energy. One could say it’s the party track of the album, so bump this when you need to get hyped up for your next shift!
*Track 12: Get Off - Zateb, Callmesolstice
Similar to ‘Off Day’ but with more urgency. You’re closing up the kitchen, and your phone is blowing up from ole girl tryna get down and dirty. Also featured on ‘Gettysburg’, this is one of my favorite collaborations with Zateb.
Track 13: Tmorrow - Callmesolstice
The finale, and final crashout of the album. This song is how I imagine it would go if I were allowed to cuss out one of those customers. You know the ones, right as you think you can start closing up the store, they walk in. Not only that, they don’t know what they want, they wanna sit down, the whole shebang. This song is everything I’ve wanted to hit them with, wrapped up in 3 min + a little spanish mixed in.
