Backstory

With over 200,000 streams overall, you could say this is the song that ‘put me on’ so to speak. Really it showed me what is possible when I really go hard on the promotion. Since it debuted it 2020, this song has been the top streamed song of mine on Spotify on a pretty consistent basis - never sliding below the number 3 spot.

And it almost didn’t even happen.

Back during the pandemic, I started recording an EP called She Goes to Another School. At the time it had a completely different concept, but all the songs were still being written so that was bound to change. While preparing the instrumentals for the first session, I stumbled across this beat on Youtube and I knew as soon as I heard it that it was special.

I bookmarked the instrumental, went and recorded those songs, and booked a session for the following week to clean up the first versions and record any other songs we could manage. That whole week I thought about nothing else. I wrote at work, at home, in the shower, shit maybe even in my sleep. In fact I finished the second verse as I was driving to the studio.

The song came out perfect on our first try, and I just couldn’t hold on to it. So I dropped the song in early October, a full 2 months before the EP that it was made for. The funny thing is, I think thats what helped it to ‘blow up’ (relatively). Since I could focus the whole budget on that one song, it was easier to pitch to curators and get placements. So I guess the lesson from this song is:

Go with your gut
